What Grade 1 measurement covers

Grade 1 measurement starts with ideas students can see and use every day. Children compare length, height, weight, and capacity, then learn to measure with same-size objects such as cubes or paper clips.

Fair measuring comes first

Before students use rulers and formal units deeply, they need fair measuring habits: start at the same end, use equal-size units, keep units in a straight line, and avoid gaps or overlaps.

Time, calendars, and data are part of the same strand

Grade 1 students also read time to the hour and half hour, use calendar words such as days and months, and answer simple data questions such as how many more or how many fewer.
