Frequency Tables: Tallies, Counts, and Grouped Data

A frequency table organizes data and shows how many times each category or value occurs.

What is a frequency table?

Frequency means how often something occurs. A frequency table lists each category or number and its count.

A tally column may be used while collecting data. The final frequency column records the total as a number.

A frequency table might be used for

  • Counting favorite playground areas: each choice has one row and an exact total.
  • Grouping journey times: intervals such as 1-5 or 6-10 minutes summarize many measurements.
  • Summarizing test scores: repeated scores can be counted without rewriting the full list.
  • Preparing a bar graph: the frequency column supplies the correct height for every bar.
  • Preparing a pictogram: exact counts help the creator choose a key that fits all categories.
  • Checking a survey total: adding the frequencies shows how many people or items were counted.
  • Recording observations: tally marks are quick to add while watching birds, vehicles, or weather.
  • Counting repeated measurements: lengths, heights, or temperatures can be organized by value or interval.
  • Comparing class choices: category frequencies show the most common and least common responses.
  • Finding the mode: the row with the greatest frequency identifies the most common result.
  • Spotting missing categories: a frequency of zero clearly shows that a result did not occur.
  • Reducing a long raw list: dozens of separate values become a short, readable summary.

How tally marks help

Tallies are grouped in fives: four straight marks and a fifth crossing mark. Groups of five make large counts quicker to see. The frequency is the number represented by all the tallies in that row.

  • frequency written as a number

This frequency table uses four separate named categories. The tallies record each choice, and the frequency column gives the final number.

The total frequency is 27, so 27 students were included in the survey.

Worked example 1: read exact categories

The swings have frequency 9, the greatest count. The garden has frequency 5, the smallest count.

The number surveyed is 7 + 9 + 5 + 6 = 27 students.

The swings received 9 - 5 = 4 more choices than the garden.

Visual example 2: journey time to school

This table groups numerical measurements into non-overlapping intervals. A journey of 8 minutes belongs in 6-10 minutes, while a journey of 13 minutes belongs in 11-15 minutes.

The total frequency is 25 journeys. The 11-15 minute interval is most common because it has frequency 10.

Worked example 2: read grouped data

The most common interval is 11-15 minutes, with frequency 10.

The total is 3 + 8 + 10 + 4 = 25 journeys.

Compare the two frequency tables

Similarity: Both tables organize counts and show a final total.

Difference: The playground table names separate categories, while the journey table groups numerical values into ranges.

The first table can identify an exact choice. The grouped table can identify an interval but not the exact journey time inside that interval.

How to build and check a frequency table

List categories that do not overlap. Read each raw value once, add one tally to the correct row, then convert tallies to frequencies. Add the frequency column and check it matches the amount of raw data.

Mistakes to avoid

  • counting one value twice
  • using overlapping intervals such as 1-5 and 5-10
  • writing a frequency that does not match its tally
  • forgetting to add frequencies for a total
  • claiming grouped data gives an exact value inside a range

When a frequency table is the best choice

Use a frequency table when exact counts and a compact summary matter. Its totals can become the heights in a bar graph or the symbol counts in a pictogram. Use a dot plot instead when readers need to see every number and the overall pattern.
