Pictograms and Pictographs: Pictures, Keys, and Data

Pictogram and pictograph mean the same thing: a data display that uses repeated pictures or symbols and a key.

Pictogram and pictograph are the same

A pictogram is also called a pictograph. Both words mean a graph that uses pictures or symbols to represent amounts.

The key is essential. One picture does not always mean one item. It might mean 2, 4, 5, or another number.

A pictogram or pictograph might be used for

  • Showing favorite fruits: repeated fruit symbols make a small class survey friendly and easy to scan.
  • Counting baskets sold at a market: one symbol can represent several baskets and keep the display compact.
  • Recording garden plants: leaf symbols can show how many plants grow in each herb or flower group.
  • Comparing vehicles: car, bus, bicycle, and truck symbols make traffic counts recognizable.
  • Displaying votes: picture rows let children see the most and least popular choices quickly.
  • Tracking books read: one book symbol might represent 2 or 5 books when totals are larger.
  • Showing pets owned: simple animal symbols make category counts memorable for young readers.
  • Comparing sports equipment: ball symbols can represent items collected by different teams.
  • Recording weather: sun, cloud, or raindrop symbols can summarize days of each type.
  • Showing fundraiser sales: one cupcake or ticket symbol can represent several items sold.
  • Comparing recycling: bottle, can, or paper symbols connect the picture directly to the category.
  • Explaining halves: a half symbol can represent half of the key value when the key is an even number.

How the key works

Multiply the number of full symbols by the value in the key. A half symbol represents half the key value. For example, if one leaf means 4 plants, half a leaf means 2 plants.

Always check

  • what one full symbol means
  • whether a half or partial symbol appears
  • whether every row uses the same key
  • whether the title names the data

Visual example 1: fruit baskets

This pictogram uses one basket picture for 2 baskets. Apples have 3 pictures, pears have 2, oranges have 4, and plums have 1.

Because every category uses the same key, we multiply each symbol count by 2.

Worked example 1: use a key of 2

Apples have 3 symbols, so 3 × 2 = 6 baskets.

Oranges have 4 symbols, so 4 × 2 = 8 baskets.

Oranges exceed plums by 8 - 2 = 6 baskets.

Visual example 2: garden plants

This pictogram uses one leaf for 4 plants. Rosemary has 2 full leaves and a half symbol, so it represents 4 + 4 + 2 = 10 plants.

The second key is different from the first. That is why readers must check the key every time, even when two displays look similar.

Worked example 2: use a key of 4

Thyme has 4 full leaves, so 4 × 4 = 16 plants.

Rosemary has 2 full leaves and 1 half leaf: 8 + 2 = 10 plants.

Compare the two pictograms

Similarity: Both datasets use repeated, equal-sized symbols to represent amounts.

Difference: One symbol means 2 in the fruit dataset but 4 in the garden dataset.

The garden display also needs a half symbol. Half of its key value 4 represents 2 plants.

How to make a pictogram

Choose a symbol and a key that represent every count without awkward fractions. Draw identical, evenly spaced symbols. Add category labels, a title, and the key. Then recount each row.

Mistakes to avoid

  • assuming one picture means one
  • forgetting to show the key
  • counting a half symbol as a whole symbol
  • using different-sized pictures to show different amounts
  • choosing a key that cannot represent the data clearly

When a pictogram is the best choice

Use a pictogram for a small, friendly dataset when pictures help the reader. When exact comparisons or many categories would become crowded with symbols, the bar graph lesson explains the clearer alternative.
