Numbers and Their Names: Number Words, Examples, Chart, and Practice Greater Than and Less Than: Basic Number Comparison for Grade 1

What Grade 1 number sense covers

Number sense is about understanding numbers, not just saying them. Grade 1 students learn to count, read numerals, write number names, compare numbers with symbols, and connect numbers to real groups of objects.

Why number names matter

A child may know the symbol 47 but still need practice saying and writing forty-seven. Number names help students read word problems, write answers clearly, and understand how tens and ones work.

Start with small numbers

The best path is to learn 0 to 20 first, then exact tens, then two-part names such as twenty-one, thirty-five, and sixty-eight.

Compare numbers with symbols

After students can read small numbers, they can decide which number is greater, which is less, and when two numbers are equal.
